Peer review was never something that I knew how to do very well until I took ENG 110. Starting off with a list of good vs bad peer review comments really helped because it made people stray from the typical “it’s good” response. Peer review was also much easier when we were given a set of guidelines and specific things to look for while reading so there was never a lack of comments or helpful feedback on anyone’s paper.
Throughout the semester and spending time practicing peer review I have seen myself get much better at helping others edit their work. I am able to provide helpful suggestions without trying to change the writer’s point or voice. I also am able to identify the top priorities for the writer to work on and give them advice about how to further improve. I can also identify spots where transitions need to be used or where the layout of the essay could be changed to make it flow better or sound more cohesive.
