Now that we are a few weeks into the semester and we’ve been able to view and workshop some of our own professional writing, I’ve already been able to get a better understanding of the style and what it entails. One thing that has been made clear across all of the reading’s we’ve done so far is that it pays to be detail oriented when it comes to professional writing. The small details like correct spelling and grammar, or using the same font sizes consistently throughout the piece are all things that send a message about you to your potential employer whether you’re aware of it or not.
Another important piece of knowledge to incorporate into professional writing is that you’re able to make it your own despite the restrictions. Whether you’re creating a cover letter or a resume, you’re able to move around the pieces of the puzzle to display your relevant personal qualities and experience in the best way. Having multiple resume styles available to use will give you the fluidity to choose whichever one best fits your qualifications. The cover letter also allows room for personal touches, leaving room toward the end for you to display your personal qualities that you believe make you a good employee.
The final thing I have taken away from our work thus far is that you must be interested in the work that you’re doing to really succeed in what you’re trying to accomplish. During class time we are able to use fake examples and made up names in our writing, but when we bring these skills to the real world this won’t be the case. We need to have a genuine interest in the company we’re applying for to get noticed during the long rounds of viewing applications and interviewing possible candidates. Doing your research about the company beforehand not only shows that you care about this job application, but also allows you to express your interest in their work in particular because you know about the things that they do. It also allows you to mention the ways that your skills would be transferable to this available position in the best ways.
