At the start of this drafty draft journey I really hated the poem that I initially wrote down on the page, and a big part of me wanted to give up on it and go with something completely different. This was probably the biggest challenge that I encountered throughout this process, but I also believe that it was the major force which drove me. As I continued to work through my poem each day I saw my dislike for what I had created start to diminish, and my piece began to come together in the way that I had envisioned it would. Since my poem is about something that I truly love; coffee, I wanted it to reflect that love accurately, and become something that I love as well. My thought process throughout this exercise was to try and be as descriptive as possible so that I could provide the reader with a visual of how I make my coffee every morning, and give them a glimpse at what it feels like for me to do so. There were a lot of points in my drafting process where I felt like my writing was not improving and instead just getting more confusing and farther away from the point. Although this exercise is done and therefore my poem is “done,” I think this draft is something that I will continue to work through for a while. Despite the fact that in some ways continuous revision makes the process seem like a failure, I think it’s really a win.
