Make an informal list of your privileges.
- I identify as a cisgender female, and I look like one too
- Nobody questions me when I walk into a women’s bathroom
- I never have to explicitly state or remind people of my pronouns
- I am never asked “are you a boy or a girl?”
- I never have to question which box to check on a form
- I never fear getting fired from a job for showing who I really am
- I identify as a lesbian, but I am also feminine so I often “pass” as being straight
- I live in a time period where I won’t be killed for being gay
- I live in a time where I can be legally married to another woman
- My parents did not kick me out or send me to conversion camp for being gay
- I grew up in a middle-income home which allowed me to get a good education and continue that into college
- I am racialized as white, and I appear that way as well
- I will never be singled out or violently or verbally attacked or killed because of my race
- I don’t have to fear death by cop if I get pulled over, nor do I have to fear that I’m being pulled over on account of my race
- I have the choice to talk about race, the choice to participate in race-based protests, petitions, activism projects, etc.
- I also have the choice to avoid the topic of race if I so choose
- I will never be asked where I came from or told to go back to my home country
- I don’t have to be the classroom spokesperson for my race
