Thoughts and ideas for my activism project.
As of right now I have a few ideas floating around in my head that I could potentially do for my activism project. The first idea that I had was to take on a volunteer position at an abortion clinic in Maine or another organization such as the Planned Parenthood in Portland. Watching the Reversing Roe documentary really got me fired up and enthusiastic about reproductive rights which first gave me the idea for this project. I think that doing something along these lines would be a really fun experience but also would be really rewarding because I would be able to see the ways that my work matters and is influencing people in a positive way. I also really like this idea for my project because it is something that I could continue to do by myself and with my friends and family even after I finish taking this course and complete the required project.
Another idea that I had for my activism project was to do something along the lines of voting education and voting rights education here at UNE. Again, this idea was influenced by one of the documentaries we watched, specifically the one featuring the work done by Stacy Abrams and her team over the years. One idea that was inspired by the documentary was to have a showing of this movie in the Commons or in a lecture hall in ACHS and make the event available for all students to come and watch. At the event we could of course offer refreshments, but we could also include various resources for students to get information about their local elections and upcoming events. I know that after watching the documentary and hearing about how important voting in local elections really is, I felt the urge to become educated about this topic myself because this is something I fall short on. However, for a busy college student self-education isn’t always the easiest thing to do on top of being a full-time student. I thought it would be a good idea to make voting information easy and accessible for students so that we can all have the best opportunity possible to make a difference and have our voices heard.
