Research on the state of abortion access – April 2022

Texas

  • 2021 – B8 gets passed by the Supreme Court
    • Prohibits abortion after 6 weeks and allows suing of anyone who helps someone to get an abortion
      • Turns reproductive freedom into something more like a game, where you can benefit if you take it away from someone else and it’s framed as a “good thing”.
    • Includes the doctors who perform the abortion procedure as well as anyone else who helped set up or talked with the woman about getting an abortion.

Florida

  • Signed a ban this week that is set to take effect in July 2022
    • 15-week ban

Oklahoma

  • Only permitted if it’s necessary to prevent the death of the mother or to prevent substantial or irreversible physical impairment of the mother that substantially increases the risk of death.
  • Only physicians who are board certified in obstetrics and gynecology may provide medication abortion in the state.
  • Allows them to falsely counsel patients that a person can reverse their abortion after taking the first of the pills required for the abortion.

Kentucky

  • Only 2 clinics that perform abortions in the state currently
  • 15-week ban
    • Passed by Republican led legislature over the Democratic governor’s veto on April 13th, 2022
    • Took effect immediately
    • Bans abortion after 15 weeks and requires cremation or burial of fetal remains
      • Only exception is if her life is in danger, not for incest or rape

*Goes to show that these legislative acts are more about the fetus as opposed to the mother. Fetus is being treated with more respect than mom who is already alive and breathing*

Idaho, Texas, Oklahoma, and South Carolina all enacted bans that take effect when a fetal heartbeat is detected

  • For many women this is before they even know they’re pregnant

*Once again, goes to show that it is more about control and an unborn fetus than it is about the mother who is already a living breathing person with a life*

Connecticut (abortion protections)

  • Prevents deceptive practices by crisis pregnancy centers like those that we read about in our textbook.
