Unsurprisingly, I found that there was a ton of useful information in the small section of the chapter that we read about interviews. I found it particularly interesting to learn about all of the different types of interviews that there are, because I typically only think about employment interviews. However, I was surprised to see how many more kinds of interviews are out there and how many I have already engaged in without really knowing or thinking about it. I found the section on exit interviews to be curious because I didn’t really know that these were a thing until I started reading about them. I first heard of the term “exit interview” from a faculty member who explained to me that each graduating senior is required to have one before they leave the university to discuss their loans and options for payment or deferment. I thought it was really cool to learn that places of employment do this when someone leaves their company in order to gain some information about what the company is doing well with and what can be improved upon.
I also found it helpful to read a bit about career objectives in the CV and resume section of the chapter. I’ve worked on my CV and resume all throughout college and even in a past professional and technical writing course that I took, but one of the things that was always difficult for me to understand was the career objective section. Personally I have a hard time writing my objective but I feel like this is mostly due to the fact that over the years, I’ve forgotten what they are intended to do. Relearning a bit about resume format and the different aspects included was a helpful reminder. I feel more confident presenting my resume to potential employers now that I’ve remembered that the career objective is intended to show and tell your employer what you can do for the company as opposed to what they can do for you.
